The main part of this issue celebrates the 70th birthday of the Svět a divadlo (World and Theatre) magazine’s founder and its editor-in-chief until 2021, Karel Král. It opens with „Articles”, an interview with Král by Jakub Škorpil that looks back at the history of the magazine. It also deals with an array of themes of the theatre today. The opening section also includes studies by Radka Kunderová („Critique as an Initiator of Theatrical Life”) and Pavel Janoušek („He Who Seeks and Strengthens Margins”), looking at the dominant themes and styles of Král’s more than forty years of critical work. As a present for his jubilee, several „kindred” playwrights wrote short plays at the invitation of the editorial board and these are published under the title „Plays for Karel”. They include works by Jiří Pokorný (A Little Garden), Vít Peřina (In the Packet), Viliam Klimáček (Sophocles Asks for a Grant), S.d.Ch. (We Will Be Wiser after an Autopsy), Tomáš Kafka (Razzle Dazzle Must Go On), Karel Haloun (Doctors), Petr Nikl (Golden Hands), and AI ChatGTP (King of Karel Král). S.d.Ch. and Karel Haloun illustrated their texts themselves, others are accompanied by illustrations gifted by Lucie Lomová, Barbora Hubená, Silvie Belis and Vojtěch Velický. Two series of the year continue in this issue, too. Milo Juráni seeks inspiration in his series „Ecological Thinking Onstage” from the so-called „Verdonck’s Charter” and the conflict between artistic freedom and sustainable theatre. In the series „Live Cinema in Contemporary Czech Puppet Theatre” Veronika Švecová then marvels chiefly at stage designer Antonín Šilar, who collaborates with various directors and has had a fundamental impact on the breakthrough of different forms of live cinema into Czech theatre. The occasional series of „theatrical notions from travels” now brings director Róbert Štefančík’s account from the masterclass at Odin Teatret („Enclave of the /Im/Possible”). In the section „Classic… and the New Classics” Jitka Šotkovská writes („What is Left of the Classics”) about two notable productions at the Theatre of Moravian Slovakia in Uherské Hradiště: a semi-improvised Chekhov’s Three Sisters (directed by Zetel) and Crimp’s adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac (directed by Dodo Gombár). Barbora Sedláková („Translation of Classics for Today Readers”) reviews four out-of-Prague productions by Jakub Čermák: The Sorrows of Young Werther and Secret, Madness, Oddity, Love from Horácké Theatre Jihlava, Hamlet from the South Bohemian Theatre České Budějovice and a musical adaptation of Orlando at J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen. Josef Rubeš writes about the newest production of Karel Čapek’s White Disease at the Prague Municipal Theatres, directed by Michal Dočekal („Fight for the White Disease, Version 2023”), and Barbora Etlíková closes the section with her essay „Shadows of Monumental People” dedicated to two Miroslav Bambušek productions staged at the Prague Studio Hrdinů and dedicated to historic personalities – the philosopher Jan Patočka and the theologian Josef Zvěřina. The section „Pain and Fights… Phenomenon” includes a survey about the production God Hugged Me and Nothing by director Daniela Špinar, based on the last journals of director Petr Lébl before his death. Jakub Škorpil, Barbora Etlíková and directors Adam Svozil and Eliška Říhová were among those who respond to the survey. Ester Žantovská („Thousands Shapes of Pain”) writes about two productions dedicated to the theme of anxiety and depression – Boris Jedinák’s and Petr Jeřábek’s Thousands of Delights at Eliade’s Library of the Divadlo Na Zábradlí (Theatre on the Balustrade) and Dagmar Fričová’s Abyss staged at the Prague A studio Rubín by director Lucie Ferenzová. Vladimír Mikulka closes the section with a review of the adaptation of Daňa Horáková’s memoir book About Pavel about her life with screenwriter and film maker Pavel Juráček, staged at the Divadlo Na zábradlí (Theatre on the Balustrade) under the direction of Anna Klimešová („Without Me You Will Surely Die“). The circus section „Whispers… of Intercommunity” is dedicated to the festival Cirkopolis. Vladimír Mikulka („Between Whispers and Polystyrene”) writes about the productions S’assurer de ses propres murmures by Collectif Petit Travers, Plock! by the ensemble Grengesval, EZ by Elena Zazou and Materia by Andrea Salustri. Kateřina Lesch („Two Essays of Bitter-Sweet Reciprocity”) adds reviews of productions Cuir by the ensemble Un loup pour l’homme and Suitcaseboarding by the Czech ensemble tYhle & Co. In addition to these sections there is Barbora Sedláková’s report on the Prague performance of the Irish comedian Dylan Moran („I Can’t, I Don’t Know, I Don’t Want… So What?”).
