The main subject of this issue is contemporary drama and it is introduced by two interviews: Jakub Škorpil talks with dramaturgists Marie Špalová and David Košťák from the LETÍ Theatre, who have been dealing methodically with contemporary drama for twenty years, and Barbora Sedláková talks with playwright and director Michal Hába, incoming art director of the Činoherní studio Ústí nad Labem. The section “Slovakia” consists of essays looking at three great Slovak festivals. Zuzana Andrejco Ferusová (“The World Today and Human Rights”) reflects on the international festival Divadelná Nitra which had a largely foreign programme and particularly productions by Artem Tomilov, Vanya Demidkin and Maryna Yakubovich. Zuzana Timčíková, writing about the New Drama Festival, returns in her essay “Here and Now” to Jana Wernerová’s and Tereza Trusinová’s productions A Sad Message from a Sad Land (Divadlo Na Peróne, 2024) and Tatarka, the “life story” of the Slovak writer Dominik Tatarka, staged at the Slovak National Theatre by Dávid Paška. Both productions comment at the same time on the contemporary political situation in Slovakia. Jakub Škorpil has chosen the same key in his reflection of this year’s Dotyky a spojenia Festival and in his essay “The Land of Abandoned Creatures” he writes about productions Slovaks Will Come Alive. An Anthem for the 21st Century by Adam Dragun, Silvia Vollmann and Júlia Rázusová and Uhol_92 Theatre, Generation Z: Zombies directed by Ján Šimko at the Pavol Ország Hviezdoslav Theatre, and Outcast by Júlia Rázusová and Slzy Janka Borodáča (Janko Borodáč’s Tears) Company. The section is supplemented by excerpts from the reviewed productions, namely monologues Remember Me the Land without People by Ivana Gibová from Anthem… and Bullying from Zombies. Karolína Stehlíková (“Theatre Pulled Apart from Literature”) writes in the section “Norway” about two new productions from Oslo: Gjentakelsen presented by the Oslo Nye Teater and Heil ved Det by Norske Teater. It is accompanied by Vladimír Mikulka’s review of the adaptation of Karl Ove Knausgård’s book My Struggle: A Man in Love, staged in Jan Mikulášek’s direction at the Divadlo Na zábradlí. Further festivals looked at in this issue are Divadelní Flora Olomouc and the Kontak Festival in Toruń. Natálie Bulvasová writes in her essay “The Olomouc Settlement” about the productions Grief is a Thing with Feathers staged by the director Christopher Rüping and Schauspielhaus Bochum, Fremd by Lena Brasch and Maxim Gorki Theatre, Chemical Joy by choreographer Lenio Kaklea and Bodhi Project, Confluence by choreographer Angela Nwagbo, M/OTHERS by Eszter Salamon, the opera Hänsel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck and directed by Eliška Říhová, and about the production Returning to Reims (via Olomouc), adapted from Didier Eribon’s novel by Adam Svozil with the Divadlo na cucky. Štěpán Truhlařík then considers an adaptation of Black Swan based on some of the characters in Dostoevsky’s novel The Idiot, directed by Alvis Hermanis and staged at the Jaunais Rīgas teātris, Camus’s Caligula directed by Ivan Urivsky and staged by the Ukrainian Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre, When the Snow Melts produced by Katarzyna Minkowska and TR Warsaw, Antigone in Molenbeek staged by Anna Smolar at the Teatr Dramatyczny, Susan Sontag by Agnieszka Jakimiak and Mateusz Atman, and Fredro’s Revenge directed by Michał Zadara at the Teatr Komedia. In his review “Swing High, Swing Low” Vojtěch Voska writes about two “jazz comedies”, productions staged by the singer and director Ondřej Havelka in collaboration with his Melody Makers swing orchestra at the Prague City Theatres. Jakub Škorpil (“Technicians’ Backstage Dreams”) writes about the two latest and rather unconventional premières of the National Theatre Prague Drama Company in this season: Don Quijote. The Waste Land by the duo SKUTR is played out at the stage of The State Opera Prague and Dmytry Krymov’s Three Musketeers and Me brings onstage puppeteers, acrobats and open stage changes. The first of set of actor portraits is written by Barbora Sedláková about Dan Kranich. The series “Notable Dramas” continues with an essay about Čapek’s Makropulos Affair. The plays of this issue are from the “Dinner with a New Play” project by the LETÍ Theatre and they are Ondřej Novotný’s We Set Off the Other Way Than We Should, Hana D. Lehečková’s Thirteen and A Message from Prague Castle by Eliška Říhová.
